ArcSafe® System
Wire Fault Diagnostic Tools The ArcSafe® system is a patented suite of wire fault diagnostic tools, specifically designed to identify and locate troublesome intermittent faults or potential faults (i.e. prior to shorting event), on aircraft installed wiring systems, especially complex harnesses, where branching, multiple connectors, and terminal blocks complicate matters. Traditional reflectometry techniques do not provide this capability.
ArcSafe® systems have been developed in cooperation with the FAA. These highly portable products are simple to use and do not require prior knowledge of the aircraft wiring configuration.
As arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) become more prevalent in the aircraft industry, the need for fault validation and positive location become essential. ArcSafe® wire fault diagnostic tools are the only commercially available products having this capability. How it works: The ArcSafe® system utilizes a “low energy high voltage” method to induce a “wire safe” arc event at the defect site, providing non-destructive identification of an insulation defect. This is significant in that an intermittent fault may not manifest itself, when the aircraft is on the ground, in a stationary/non-vibratory state. The ArcSafe® system can provide fault identification across a small air gap between conductors, typical of wires, which have temporarily shorted together in flight, and then separated when not subject to flight dynamics. A unique 40 circuit sequencing function provides a comprehensive screening of the bundle under test, for both conductor to conductor faults and conductor to common ground faults. System software utilizes the spark event as the impetus for determining distance to fault. In addition, a novel method has been developed to allow automatic 3 dimensional (3D) location of the fault in aircraft coordinates.
